Ubuntu 14.04

Ubuntu Server 14.04 is the latest LTS (long term support) release of Ubuntu Server. An LTS release means that maintenance and security updates will be released for this version for the next five years.

Ubuntu Server 14.04 introduces full compatibility with the latest and greatest open-source software projects ensuring they can be relied on by testing thousands of combinations in the Ubuntu Openstack Interoperability Lab, every year.

Other notes and key features:

  • Performance improvements in virtio
  • Better TCP connection management in the face of packet loss
  • Currently is shipped with Python 3 with an upgrade planned to Python 3.4 soon
  • General performance and latency improvements have been made across the board for filesystems such as Btrfs, XFS, and Ext4. Metadata checksumming and improved quota support for Btrfs, XFS, and Ext4 have been included as well as Ext2/3 support via the Ext4 driver
  • Improvements to AppArmor allow more fine-grained control over applications security
  • Includes Apache 2.4; this is a major version upgrade from Apache 2.2 in Ubuntu 12.04 LTS
  • Official support for strongSwan, a feature rich, modern IPSec solution
  • Ubuntu 14.04 LTS includes Puppet 3, a major version upgrade from previous Ubuntu LTS releases and includes many changes which are not compatible with Puppet 2.7.x.

CentOS 7

CentOS 7 is the newest iteration of the popular CentOS package which aims to provide a free, enterprise class, community-supported computing platform. This is the first open source release since the merging of The CentOS Project and Red Hat. It is currently only available for x86_64 and includes many changes in this release compared to previous releases of CentOS. Major changes such as the inclusion of systemd and a default filesystem of XFS.
